Russia has stepped up a massive information campaign to mark the anniversary of Nazi Germany’s attack on the Soviet Union. The Center for Countering Disinformation says<\/a> the Kremlin is using historical events to justify a full-scale war against Ukraine.<\/strong><\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

According to the CPD, Russian state media and officials are attempting to draw parallels between the events of 1941 and the modern war. In particular, propaganda is spreading narratives that baselessly identify Ukrainians with the Nazis and Western countries with the Hitlerite coalition.<\/p>\n

The Center notes that the Russian military is being called “heirs of the victors,” trying to present the war against Ukraine as an alleged continuation of the fight against Nazism.<\/p>\n

The Kremlin pays special attention to foreign audiences. Through events with the participation of “Rossotrudnichestvo”, particularly in countries of the Global South, Russia promotes the thesis of the Soviet Union as the main victim of World War II, while at the same time identifying it exclusively with modern Russia.<\/p>\n

The CPD emphasizes that in this way Moscow is trying to divert the attention of the international community from its own aggression and war crimes, as well as create the image of its war as an alleged “historic mission.”<\/p>\n
