The European Commission has said it is ready to submit relevant proposals for consideration.

This is reported by the Financial Times .

During a meeting of energy ministers, Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania urged the European Commission to urgently consider a proposal to phase out Russian oil imports. The Baltic states stressed that continued purchases of Russian energy would allow Moscow to continue financing its war against Ukraine.

According to the publication, European Commissioner for Energy Dan Jorgensen did not comment on the initiative during a closed meeting. At the same time, the European Commission confirmed its readiness to submit relevant proposals for consideration in the future.

Discussions on the issue have intensified after the situation around the Strait of Hormuz stabilized. After agreements between the US and Iran to extend the ceasefire, shipping through the key energy route is gradually being restored. Earlier, due to the risks of supply disruptions, the European Union postponed consideration of new restrictions.

The European Commission noted that the share of Russian oil in EU imports decreased from 27% in 2022 to about 2% in 2025. This amounts to approximately 9.7 million tons of crude oil.

The European Union has already agreed to completely abandon Russian gas by the fall of 2027. At the same time, the issue of completely abandoning Russian oil remains a subject of discussion due to possible risks for the energy market.

“Warsaw supports the adoption of a decision as soon as possible, even despite the potential economic consequences,” said Polish Deputy Energy Minister Wojciech Wrochna.

The European Commission also noted that the global oil market is showing resilience despite geopolitical tensions. However, full restoration of stability in the oil market may take months and in the gas market – years.

Who is helping Russia the most to circumvent sanctions on oil exports: investigation

By the way, Canada has announced a new package of sanctions against Russia.
