The Polish government has proposed to Germany that it introduce annual payments for victims of Nazi persecution, but Berlin has refused to support the initiative. This is a much more modest proposal than Warsaw’s previous demands for reparations for World War II crimes.<\/strong><\/p>\n

According to journalists, the Polish government has proposed to Germany to abandon the discussion of large-scale reparations and instead introduce annual humanitarian payments for people who survived Nazi persecution.<\/p>\n

The initiative would provide PLN 10,000 per year to each victim. It is estimated that the program would initially reach almost 50,000 people and cost the German budget around EUR 100 million in the first year.<\/p>\n

As journalists note, the new strategy of Donald Tusk’s government significantly differed from the position of the previous Polish government, which demanded reparations of 1.3 trillion euros from Berlin. Instead, the current proposal focused exclusively on targeted support for living victims of Nazi persecution.<\/p>\n

At the same time, the German federal government has officially refused Poland this initiative for the first time. According to Der Spiegel journalists, this effectively means the failure of Warsaw’s new, much softer strategy for resolving the issue of compensation for World War II crimes.<\/p>\n
