The Dutch Defense Ministry has unveiled a new initiative centered on the widespread use of drones, a strategy it says is based on lessons learned from the war in Ukraine and conflicts in the Middle East.<\/strong><\/p>\n

This is reported by<\/a> Euractiv.<\/p>\n

According to the “Defense White Paper 2026” published by the Dutch Ministry of Defense, unmanned aerial vehicles should be used “wherever possible.”<\/p>\n

The department notes that over the next five years, they plan to ensure that drones provide more than half of combat results.<\/p>\n

The strategy, which spans more than 100 pages, envisions the Army using a combination of high-tech, affordable, interchangeable and unmanned assets.<\/p>\n

The Ministry of Defense is expected to establish a “development laboratory” with industry to create, test and improve counter-drone capabilities, as well as to stimulate innovation. The overall goal is to form a “Dutch drone ecosystem.”<\/p>\n

At the same time, it is currently unknown when the new initiative will be officially presented.<\/p>\n

Changing approaches to warfare also carries ethical risks.<\/p>\n

“People should be able to reasonably predict the consequences of using unmanned weapons systems with autonomous functions,” the document states.<\/p>\n

The government is also expected to present an \u201cintegrated policy\u201d on the ethics and moral principles of the armed forces, which should define how the use of new technologies by military personnel will comply with international law.<\/p>\n

It was previously reported that the Netherlands announced a new military aid package to Ukraine<\/a> worth 500 million euros. The funds will be used to purchase drones, air defense systems, and other weapons.<\/p>\n

The Naval Forces of the Armed Forces of Ukraine also received another mine countermeasure ship from the Kingdom of the Netherlands<\/a> within the framework of the Coalition of Maritime Capabilities. The transferred minesweeper “Genichesk” became the fifth mine countermeasure ship in the Ukrainian fleet.<\/p>\n
