During a meeting with Ukrainian Ambassador to the United Kingdom and former Commander-in-Chief of the Ukrainian Armed Forces, Valeriy Zaluzhny, President Volodymyr Zelensky reportedly asked whether he planned to run in the presidential elections if they were held in the fall.<\/p>\n
This was reported by Ukrainska Pravda, citing its own sources.<\/p>\n
According to the publication, the formal reason for Zaluzhny’s visit to Kyiv was to discuss the political situation in the UK following the preparations for Prime Minister Keir Starmer’s resignation and the potential impact on Ukrainian-British relations.<\/p>\n
After this, according to UP sources, the conversation turned to the possible presidential elections in Ukraine. According to sources, Zelenskyy noted that the situation on the front lines had recently improved, and society remained fairly united, which allegedly created a window of opportunity for holding elections. At the same time, he emphasized the need to avoid internal confrontation and a possible political schism.<\/p>\n
According to the publication, the president directly asked Zaluzhny whether he would run in the elections if they were held in the fall. According to UP sources, the former commander-in-chief replied, “Yes. I will.”<\/p>\n
The publication also writes that during the conversation, Zelensky did not offer Zaluzhny any alternative options for further government service, although, according to government sources, Bankova was allegedly prepared to discuss various positions, including that of head of government.<\/p>\n
According to UP, Zaluzhny explained his position by saying he never aspired to a political career, but felt a responsibility to the people who placed their hopes in him. After the conversation, the two sides shook hands.<\/p>\n
