The note depicts Ukrainian poet, dissident and human rights activist Vasyl Stus.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The NBU leadership announced this during a briefing.<\/p>\n<p>The new banknote will be put into circulation on September 4, 2026 \u2014 the day of Vasyl Stus&#8217;s death.<\/p>\n<p>The National Bank explained that the appearance of the 2,000 hryvnia note will help reduce costs for logistics and cash circulation, as well as optimize the transportation of banknotes.<\/p>\n<p>According to the NBU&#8217;s calculations, replacing 1,000-hryvnia banknotes with 2,000-hryvnia banknotes will halve logistics costs. Compared to transporting 500-hryvnia banknotes, costs could be reduced fourfold, and 200-hryvnia banknotes by tenfold.<\/p>\n<p>The regulator noted that since the appearance of the 1,000-hryvnia banknote in 2019, the average monthly salary in Ukraine has tripled, and the price level has doubled.<\/p>\n<p>If seven years ago, about ten banknotes of the largest denomination were enough to pay the average salary in cash, then in 2026, this will require more than 30 1,000 hryvnia banknotes.<\/p>\n<p>According to the NBU, the amount of cash in circulation has more than doubled during this time \u2014 from almost 390 billion hryvnias in 2019 to over 970 billion hryvnias as of July 1, 2026.
