The Supreme Anti-Corruption Court found former MP Andriy Derkach guilty of high treason and illicit enrichment. The court sentenced him to 15 years in prison with confiscation of all his property.<\/strong><\/p>\n

This was reported by the press service<\/a> of the Ukrainian Academy of Sciences.<\/p>\n

The Supreme Anti-Corruption Court also deprived Andriy Derkach of the right to hold positions in state and local government bodies for a period of 3 years.<\/p>\n

According to preliminary information, during the court debates, which lasted from June 9 to 23, the prosecutor stated that the guilt of the accused was fully proven.<\/p>\n

It is worth adding that after the start of Russia’s full-scale war against Ukraine, Derkach left the country.<\/p>\n

According to the investigation, in 2019-2020 Derkach met in Moscow with representatives of the Main Directorate of the General Staff of the Russian Armed Forces, after which he held press conferences with the aim of discrediting Ukraine. Also, according to the investigation, the examinations confirmed the discussion of bribes to finance this activity and its subversive nature.<\/p>\n

Derkach’s defense insisted on the inadmissibility of some of the prosecution’s evidence and claimed violations during the pre-trial investigation. The lawyers also argued that their client’s actions did not exceed the limits of his parliamentary powers, and that the fact of cooperation with Russian military intelligence had not been proven.<\/p>\n

In August 2023, NABU and SAPO completed the pre-trial investigation into the case. According to the investigation, the former MP received at least $567,000 from Russian law enforcement and intelligence agencies for subversive activities against Ukraine. The case has been under consideration in the Supreme Anti-Corruption Court since December 2023.<\/p>\n

In March 2021, US intelligence reported Derkach’s involvement in Russia’s attempts to organize a campaign to discredit Joe Biden, after which sanctions were imposed against him. In August 2021, Ukraine also imposed personal sanctions on Derkach. In October 2022, the Supreme Anti-Corruption Court arrested him in absentia, and in January 2023, the Verkhovna Rada stripped him of his parliamentary mandate.<\/p>\n
