US President Donald Trump has voiced support for a bipartisan bill imposing tougher sanctions on Russia, a measure introduced by the late Republican Senator Lindsey Graham and now gaining renewed momentum in Congress.<\/strong><\/p>\n

This was reported by<\/a> CNN, citing a White House representative.<\/p>\n

According to the TV channel, Trump’s support could significantly accelerate the bill’s progress in Congress. Earlier, Senator Lindsey Graham, together with Democratic Senator Richard Blumenthal, stated that the US administration was ready to support the document after lengthy negotiations. At the same time, it remained unclear whether the president would personally approve it, as Trump has repeatedly advocated for greater latitude in imposing sanctions.<\/p>\n

Senate Republican Majority Leader John Thune said the White House worked closely with Graham on the bill.<\/p>\n

“It’s going to take Democrats and Republicans here in the Senate, but I’m hopeful we can do it,” he said.<\/p>\n

According to Thune, the sanctions package was one of Lindsey Graham’s top priorities in the final days of his life and could become an important part of his political legacy.<\/p>\n

In turn, Richard Blumenthal announced that he plans to discuss with the Senate leadership the final preparation of the document and the timing of its consideration, as well as identify a new Republican co-author of the bill to replace Graham.<\/p>\n

In particular, the document is expected to give the US president the ability to impose high tariffs on imports from countries that purchase Russian oil, natural gas, and uranium in order to increase economic pressure on Russia over its war against Ukraine.<\/p>\n

“This should be seen as a fitting tribute to Senator Graham \u2014 to do it quickly in his memory,” Blumenthal said.<\/p>\n
