At the Ukraine-European Union intergovernmental conference, Cluster 6 of the negotiations on Ukraine’s accession to the EU, entitled “External Relations,” was officially opened.<\/strong><\/p>\n

This was announced by the European Commissioner for Enlargement, Marta Kos.<\/p>\n

This cluster includes issues of common foreign policy, security and defense, international trade, humanitarian aid and development cooperation.<\/p>\n

EU member states agreed on the first negotiating cluster for Ukraine’s accession to the European Union on June 15. However, the opening of clusters is not scheduled; their consideration depends on the candidate state’s progress in implementing the necessary reforms.<\/p>\n

Despite the support of all 27 EU member states for the start of the negotiation process, Hungary long blocked it. Former Prime Minister Viktor Orb\u00e1n consistently opposed Ukraine’s progress toward European integration.<\/p>\n

Following the parliamentary elections, the new government led by P\u00e9ter Magyar announced a more pragmatic approach to this issue, although it has not yet expressed open support for Ukraine’s accession to the EU. At the same time, Budapest insists on expanding the rights of the Hungarian national minority in Ukraine as a condition for further progress in negotiations.<\/p>\n

Earlier, on June 4, the Financial Times<\/em> reported that Hungary had lifted its veto, allowing negotiations on Ukraine and Moldova’s accession to the European Union to officially begin.<\/p>\n

Previously, “Pryamiy” reported on the EU’s decision to open the first negotiating cluster for Ukraine<\/a> \u2013 “Basics.” This cluster covers issues of the rule of law, the judicial system, civil rights and freedoms, and the functioning of democratic institutions.<\/p>\n
