Hungarian Defense Minister Romulus Ruzin-Sendy said that the country’s new government seeks to restore the trust of NATO allies and strengthen protection against Russian influence.<\/strong><\/p>\n

This was reported by<\/a> Telex, citing the minister’s speech at the Budapest Energy and Security Talks conference, organized by the Balance Institute.<\/p>\n

According to the minister, the basis of the new defense policy should be a strategy that takes into account the interests of both Hungary and its allies. He emphasized that Budapest’s interests coincide with those of the Alliance, and trust in the country must be restored.<\/p>\n

Ruzin-Sendy said that one of the first steps of the new government was to apologize to some allies, including Finland, whose accession to NATO was delayed by the previous Hungarian government. He called such a position unacceptable.<\/p>\n

“We are closing the door to the Russians,” the minister said, adding that Russian intelligence services “tried to enter through the back door.”<\/p>\n

At the same time, he noted that the government pays attention not only to the Russian-Ukrainian war, but also to the security situation in the Middle East. In his opinion, any conflicts end when governments, armies, and societies desire it.<\/p>\n

Separately, Ruzin-Sendy commented on NATO countries’ commitments to increase defense spending to 5% of GDP. According to him, Hungary plans to reach this figure by 2035, but for now, funding for education and healthcare remains a priority due to the difficult economic situation.<\/p>\n

The minister also reported that the country is continuing the modernization of its army, which began in 2017. According to him, Hungary is already negotiating with several European defense companies regarding the opening of production facilities on its territory and the development of the national defense industry.<\/p>\n

It was previously reported that the Hungarian government has submitted to parliament a bill on a large-scale constitutional reform<\/a> , which envisages changes in the system of public administration. One of the provisions of the document is the early termination of the powers of the current President Tam\u00e1s Szuj\u00f3k.<\/p>\n
