The UK government will hold its largest defence exercise in decades in 2027 to test its preparedness for cyberattacks, sabotage, disinformation campaigns and other hybrid threats. The preparations are being stepped up amid Russia’s war in Ukraine and NATO warnings of possible aggression by Moscow against Europe by 2030.<\/strong><\/p>\n

It is noted that the main goal of the exercises will be to test the ability of state bodies to respond to hybrid threats, including cyberattacks, disinformation campaigns, and sabotage of critical infrastructure facilities.<\/p>\n

Following Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine, the UK and other European countries have significantly increased their defence preparations, while NATO has repeatedly warned that Moscow could pose a direct threat to European states by 2030.<\/p>\n

London also claims that Russian hybrid threats are increasing, which include physical and cyberattacks, as well as information operations.<\/p>\n

Details of the scenarios for future exercises are not being disclosed at this time.<\/p>\n

According to British government officials, the exercises are intended to assess the country’s level of preparedness for large-scale hybrid attacks and will complement NATO crisis exercises, during which allies practice coordinating political and military actions in the event of serious security crises.<\/p>\n

British government official Darren Jones said the training would last several days and involve ministers as well as hundreds of representatives from government agencies and public sector organizations.<\/p>\n

In addition, the United Kingdom has updated its official list of the greatest threats to national security, which for the first time includes interference in democratic processes, including attempts to influence elections, disinformation campaigns and foreign influence operations.<\/p>\n

Seven new risks were also added to the list, including cyberattacks on data storage systems, water supply networks, and police infrastructure.<\/p>\n

The risk of “digital resilience failure” is highlighted separately, taking into account the large-scale incident with CrowdStrike in 2024, which led to the failure of more than eight million Microsoft Windows-based computers worldwide.<\/p>\n

The government also announced that it plans to launch a nationwide information campaign in 2026, urging citizens to prepare for emergencies, including extreme weather events, floods, and large-scale cyberattacks.<\/p>\n
