The Verkhovna Rada adopted an appeal initiated by Petro Poroshenko to the United Nations, the parliaments and governments of UN member states, member states of the European Union and NATO, the European Parliament, UNESCO, the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe, the OSCE Parliamentary Assembly, the OSCE Parliamentary Assembly, the genocide of the Russian Federation directed against the Ukrainian people.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Petro Poroshenko said this while presenting the draft resolution<\/a> in parliament.<\/p>\n

Russia is deliberately destroying Ukraine’s cultural and historical heritage, attempting to erase it just as it did our cities and villages. The aggressor country should be excluded from all international institutions.<\/p>\n

“There are things, there are issues, that unite this Verkhovna Rada. I greatly appreciate and am honored to address an issue that unites us all \u2013 the preservation of the nation, the preservation of the cultural gene pool \u2013 and unites the entire world around Ukraine,” Poroshenko emphasized.<\/p>\n

“Is the term ‘cultural genocide’ too strong, it might seem? No. Shevchenko once wrote about cultural genocide: ‘And the Muscovite is tearing up my dear graves… digging, excavating, seeking what is not his.’ Those are the exact words of the Kobzar. Even then, the empire was excavating burial mounds, appropriating our cultural artifacts, appropriating and still appropriating our history,” the fifth President of Ukraine emphasized.<\/p>\n

“We’re used to thinking that the state border runs along the map. Not only that. The state border runs through language, memory, museums, theaters, and traditions. That’s why the enemy is attacking the Kyiv Pechersk Lavra, why the enemy is attacking Shukhevych’s house, the Dovzhenko Film Studio, the Art Arsenal, the Kharkiv Art Museum, and the House of Organ Music in Dnipro. These aren’t random attacks. This is a deliberate attempt to destroy our historical and cultural memory,” he emphasized.<\/p>\n

“They say that culture is the adornment of a state. No. Culture is the state itself. Therefore, our appeal is to immediately condemn and expel the aggressor from all international organizations,” Poroshenko said.<\/p>\n
