Eight Ukrainian media outlets united under the umbrella of “Initiative 143” and simultaneously published an investigation into 143 properties previously owned by the brother of the director of the State Bureau of Investigation, Oleksiy Sukhachev.<\/strong><\/p>\n

This was reported by the initiative’s participants, in particular Radio Liberty and NV.<\/p>\n

The initiative was joined by Ukrainska Pravda<\/strong> , Obshchestvennoye<\/strong> , Skhemy (Radio Liberty)<\/strong> , hromadske<\/strong> , Zerkalo Nedeli<\/strong> , NV<\/strong> , Bihus.Info<\/strong> , and Toronto Television<\/strong> . The name “Initiative 143” derives from the number of apartments and non-residential premises featured in the journalistic investigation.<\/p>\n

The journalists stated that their publication was an act of solidarity with the editorial boards of Slidstvo.Info<\/strong> and the Anti-Corruption Action Center (ACC)<\/strong> , which were banned from distributing the material by Kyiv’s Pechersky District Court. The initiative’s participants believe that such a ban constitutes censorship.<\/p>\n

The investigation notes that the DBR director’s brother is no longer the owner of these 143 properties. Journalists also drew attention to a criminal investigation into the developer of the housing complex, which, according to their information, may have been connected to the DBR director’s brother. The case was initially investigated by the DBR, but was subsequently transferred to the police, where the investigation was closed. After the defendants received journalistic inquiries, the investigation was reopened.<\/p>\n

According to Anna Babinets, founding editor of Sledstva.Info, the collective publication was a demonstration of the media community’s solidarity in defense of freedom of speech and independent journalism.<\/p>\n

The Anti-Corruption Action Center recalled that on June 24, they contacted Alexey Sukhachev with a request regarding the origin of his brother’s property, and also sent a similar request to Parkovy-2 LLC<\/strong> , a company linked to this story. Journalists received no responses to their requests. The Anti-Corruption Action Center announced it would appeal the court’s decision to ban the publication of the investigation.<\/p>\n
