Irish Academy Award-winning actress Brenda Fricker has died at the age of 81. She was the first Irish actress to win an Academy Award.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Brenda Fricker won an Academy Award in 1990 for Best Supporting Actress for her role as Daniel Day-Lewis’ mother in My Left Foot. She was also known for her roles as nurse Megan Roach in the TV series Casualty and the pigeon woman in Home Alone 2.<\/p>\n

In a statement, agent Phil Belfield said: “We will never see a man like him again, and the world is poorer for his loss,” said Phil Belfield.<\/p>\n

Fricker was born in Dublin and began her acting career in the 1960s. She appeared in the Irish soap opera Tolka Row, the British soap opera Coronation Street, and the television drama Licking Hitler. In 1986, she was cast in the first episode of Casualty, a role she continued until 1990, returning to the role intermittently until 2010.<\/p>\n

In 1990, Fricker became the first Irish actress to win an Academy Award. In 2024, she stated that after winning the award, she faced typical roles and received fewer new offers.<\/p>\n

U.S. Ambassador to Ireland Edward Walsh called Fricker a “giant of Irish cinema” and praised her “unforgettable” role in “My Left Foot.” Dublin’s Lord Mayor Ray McAdam had previously proposed making the actress an honorary citizen of the city, calling her one of the most prominent figures in Irish culture.<\/p>\n
