Jason Asher, director of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, warned of the risk of a large-scale humanitarian crisis.<\/p>\n<p>The outbreak was caused by the Bundibugyo virus, a rare variant of the Ebola virus for which there is currently no approved vaccine or treatment.<\/p>\n<p>The situation is complicated by problems with the functioning of the medical system. Due to threats to the safety of doctors, the provision of assistance in the most affected province of Ituri remains limited.<\/p>\n<p>At least 12 attacks on medical facilities and ambulances have been recorded since the outbreak began.
