The European Union has suspended funding for the Venice Biennale after organizers decided to reinstate the Russian pavilion. The grant is worth 2 million euros.<\/strong><\/p>\n

This is reported by<\/a> Babel, citing the decision of the European Executive Agency for Education and Culture.<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

The Venice Biennale is one of the most prestigious international exhibitions of contemporary art, held every two years in Italy and combining thematic exhibitions and national pavilions.<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

Russia’s participation in the exhibition was canceled after the start of a full-scale invasion of Ukraine in 2022. However, this year the Russian pavilion was again included in the biennale program.<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

The decision drew criticism from European officials and culture ministers from 22 countries. In addition, the jury members collectively resigned, refusing to evaluate the Russian and Israeli exhibits.<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

After that, the organizers changed the format for determining the winners. In particular, the winners of the new “Visitors’ Lions” nominations will be chosen by the exhibition guests themselves, which again allowed Russia to apply for awards.<\/p>\n

The awards ceremony was also postponed from May 9 to November 22 – the last day of the Venice Biennale.<\/p>\n
