The meteor shower will last until August 24, and the largest number of “shooting stars” can be seen on the night of August 12-13. Under favorable weather conditions, up to 80 meteors per hour will cross the sky.

This is reported by Blikk.

According to the publication, the Perseids occur every year when Earth passes through a trail of dust and small particles left behind by comet 109P/Swift-Tuttle. Once they enter the atmosphere, they burn up and create bright flashes of light.

The name of the meteor shower comes from the constellation Perseus. It is from there that meteors appear to be shooting out, although in reality this is just an optical effect.

To see a meteor shower, you don’t need any special equipment. It’s best to get away from city lights, choose a place with an open horizon, and observe the sky late in the evening or before dawn. Astronomers recommend giving your eyes about 20–30 minutes to adjust to the darkness.

At the same time, the quality of observations can be affected by bright moonlight, so nights when the Moon does not illuminate the sky too much will be the best.

The Perseids are considered one of the most spectacular meteor showers of the year. In addition to being a fascinating spectacle for astronomy enthusiasts, they are also of interest to scientists who study the activity of the shower and the properties of particles left behind by the comet.

Also follow “Pryamim” on Facebook , X , Telegram , and Instagram.

In the coming days, residents of Ukraine will be able to observe one of the most spectacular astronomical events of the year – the Perseid meteor shower.
