The Russian government has legally allowed military service for individuals convicted of serious criminal offenses. The Kremlin is thus trying to compensate for the significant losses of personnel in the war against Ukraine.<\/strong><\/p>\n

This was reported by<\/a> the Center for Countering Disinformation.<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

The Center noted that previously Russia actively recruited foreigners, conscripts, students, and residents of temporarily occupied territories of Ukraine into its army. Now, the path to the army has been officially opened to those convicted of serious crimes.<\/p>\n

According to the CPD, the first to introduce such a practice was the private military company Wagner, led by Yevgeny Prigozhin. At that time, the recruitment of prisoners was not enshrined at the legislative level and caused public debate in Russia.<\/p>\n

The Center emphasizes that currently the main task for the Kremlin is to replenish losses at any cost.<\/p>\n

The Central Military Commission also recalled that, according to their data, this fall Russia plans to mobilize about 500,000 more citizens to participate in the war against Ukraine. <\/p>\n
