British intelligence believes that Russia may be preparing a direct provocation against the UK and its NATO allies in the coming months. According to the British side, the Kremlin may use the situation to test the reaction of the country’s new government.<\/strong><\/p>\n

According to the publication, British intelligence calls US President Donald Trump’s focus on the situation around Iran, as well as signs of a split in the Ukrainian leadership, one of the factors influencing the Kremlin’s actions.<\/p>\n

Last month, British marines intercepted one of the tankers of the so-called “shadow fleet” as it was sailing around the English Channel. At the same time, sources suggest that Russia may resort to larger-scale provocations.<\/p>\n

“There is now a strong belief that Putin is preparing some kind of direct confrontation with NATO over the next few months. This is influenced by a number of factors – the belief that Trump is distracted by Iran and signs of a split in the Ukrainian leadership,” the source told the publication.<\/p>\n

The interlocutor also noted that disappointment with the course of the war against Ukraine may push the Kremlin to take risky steps.<\/p>\n

“There is a feeling that if he cannot somehow change the situation on the battlefield, the war will be lost,” the source said.<\/p>\n

According to the publication, another factor could be a change of government in the UK, as the Kremlin is allegedly keen to test the reaction of the new prime minister. UK Defence Secretary Wes Streeting said that London is ready to respond to any potential provocations from Russia.<\/p>\n

“Russia should have no doubt about the determination of this government and this prime minister to resist Russian aggression, not only in Ukraine, but any aggression against the UK and our allies,” Streeting said.<\/p>\n

As the publication notes, the warning from British intelligence came amid discussions about NATO’s readiness to respond to possible threats and maintain the necessary pace of weapons production in the event of further escalation of the situation.<\/p>\n

It has previously been reported thatRussia may resort to provocations against NATO countries<\/a> using drones disguised as Ukrainian ones. According to preliminary assessments, with such attacks the Kremlin may try to undermine trust in Ukraine and aggravate relations between Kyiv and its allies.<\/p>\n

As a reminder, Polish Foreign Minister Radoslaw Sikorski stated that Russia may be preparing an operation “under a foreign flag” by using Ukrainian drones for provocation.<\/a><\/p>\n
