A Ukrainian court found two major generals and four commanders of battalion tactical groups of the Russian Guard guilty of violating the laws and customs of war during the seizure of the Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant in March 2022. Each of them was sentenced in absentia to 12 years in prison.<\/strong><\/p>\n

This was announced by<\/a> Prosecutor General Ruslan Kravchenko.<\/p>\n

The investigation established that on the night of March 4, 2022, the Russian military stormed the Zaporizhzhia NPP using tanks and heavy armored vehicles. The territory of the station, including areas near the nuclear reactors and the spent nuclear fuel storage facility, came under fire.<\/p>\n

The attack caused a fire at the plant, damaged critical engineering networks and communications. In addition, the Russian military prevented rescuers from extinguishing the fire, and ZNPP personnel were blocked from their workplaces.<\/p>\n

According to experts, the actions of the occupiers could have led to the destruction of the reactors’ protective barriers and a large-scale release of radioactive substances, which posed a threat not only to Ukraine, but also to other European countries.<\/p>\n

The court found that the operation was led by two major generals and four commanders of battalion tactical groups of the Russian Guard, who coordinated the actions of the units during the seizure of the station. All six were found guilty of violating the laws and customs of war and sentenced in absentia to 12 years in prison.<\/p>\n

“The shelling of the Zaporizhzhia NPP became one of the most dangerous episodes of this war. It was a deliberate attack on a facility, an accident at which could have caused a large-scale radiation disaster,” emphasized Prosecutor General Ruslan Kravchenko.<\/p>\n

It was previously reported that Russian troops have deployed military equipment, ammunition depots, and missile systems on the territory of the Zaporizhzhia NPP<\/a> , while IAEA experts still do not have full access to the facility.<\/p>\n
