The US Senate has completed work on a bill on new tough sanctions against Russia. The document envisages economic pressure not only on Moscow, but also on countries that continue to buy Russian oil and gas.<\/strong><\/p>\n

According to the agency, a bipartisan group of senators has agreed on the final version of the bill, which has already been dubbed “hell sanctions” in Washington. A procedural vote in the Senate is scheduled for July 28.<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

The document gives the US president the right to impose additional economic restrictions against the five largest importers of Russian energy, as well as five states that help Russia circumvent sanctions.<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

In addition, the bill allows for a 500 percent tariff on Russian goods imported into the United States.<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

Another provision envisages the possibility of introducing a 100 percent tariff on the largest buyers of Russian oil and gas and countries that facilitate the circumvention of sanctions. At the same time, it is proposed to limit these presidential powers to a five-year term.<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

The document also extends the Iran Sanctions Act until 2031, maintaining the mechanism of secondary sanctions against foreign companies that cooperate with Tehran.<\/p>\n

However, even if the Senate supports the bill, it will not come into effect anytime soon. The House of Representatives has already gone on its August recess, so final consideration of the bill is not expected until September.<\/p>\n

Recall that the Committee of Permanent Representatives of the European Union (Coreper) reached a political agreement on the 21st package of sanctions against Russia<\/a> .<\/p>\n

It was previously reported that on July 15 and 22, EU countries failed to reach an agreement on the 21st package of sanctions. The main obstacle remained the position of Greece<\/a> , which insisted on extending the permit for the re-export of Russian liquefied natural gas to third countries. <\/p>\n
