This week, the discount on Urals crude for Indian buyers has shrunk to $1-2 per barrel, down from more than $10 in early July.

This was reported by Reuters, citing sources among traders.

According to the agency’s interlocutors, Indian oil refiners have become more active in buying Russian oil due to risks to supplies from the Middle East. After the resumption of US military action against Iran and disruptions to shipping through the Strait of Hormuz, buyers began to look for more predictable sources of raw materials.

Traders say that just a few weeks ago, the situation was completely different. Back then, Russia was forced to sell oil at a discount of more than $10 per barrel due to a surplus of Middle Eastern oil on the market and weak demand from China. Now, that discount has all but disappeared.

One of the sources told Reuters that Russian oil has become one of the most stable sources of supply for Indian refineries this year, but warned that prices would remain volatile due to geopolitical tensions.

China has also increased its purchases of Russian oil. According to Reuters, India increased imports from Russia and Latin America in the second quarter, while supplies from the Middle East fell due to transportation problems through the Strait of Hormuz.

After the start of a full-scale war against Ukraine, India and China became the largest buyers of Russian oil, which Moscow reoriented to the Asian market after losing most of its European customers.

Earlier it was reported that the US is growing concerned about the lack of military resources amid the escalating conflict with Iran. According to sources, the Pentagon is preparing for a possible expansion of the military operation, but its capabilities are limited.

Recall that the price of Brent crude oil increased at trading on Monday, July 14. For the first time in a month, the price exceeded $87 per barrel against the backdrop of aggravation of relations between the US and Iran, as well as new attacks on shipping in the Strait of Hormuz.

Also follow “Pryamim” on Facebook , X , Telegram , and Instagram.

It is becoming increasingly difficult for Russia to sell oil at deep discounts.
