SpaceX and Tesla have announced the construction of the Terafab manufacturing complex in Grimes County, Texas. The plant is expected to become the world’s largest full-cycle chip manufacturing facility and provide the companies with their own chips.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Terafab will have a vertically integrated production cycle – from crystal growth and logic circuit creation to packaging and final testing of processors. According to the developers, this should reduce the time between creating an engineering drawing and receiving a finished chip.<\/p>\n

The area of the complex will be about 9.3 million square meters, which corresponds to the area of approximately 1,300 football fields.<\/p>\n

The factory is to produce chips for edge computing that will be used in Tesla Optimus robots, Cybercab autonomous taxis, and computing systems for SpaceX space data centers.<\/p>\n

The first phase of the project involves an investment of $16.8 billion. It is expected to create at least 3,000 jobs, as well as partnerships with local colleges to train specialists.<\/p>\n

According to the publication, SpaceX’s operations in Texas have already provided more than 56,000 jobs and brought the state more than $28 billion in economic impact.<\/p>\n

The construction of Terafab has also raised questions about the complex’s environmental impact. The company plans to draw on the Gibbons Creek Reservoir for water supply, as well as use its own water treatment facilities and water reuse systems.<\/p>\n

The factory is expected to be part of SpaceX and Tesla’s strategy to reduce dependence on third-party suppliers and global chip supply chains.<\/p>\n
