Russia is increasingly tightening its military recruitment efforts due to heavy losses in the war against Ukraine. The Kremlin is trying to avoid a new wave of mobilization, but there are not enough people willing to sign contracts.<\/strong><\/p>\n

According to the publication, the need for new military personnel is related to the Russian Federation’s losses, which exceed 30,000 people per month, and the unchanged strategy of Vladimir Putin, who is ready to continue the offensive at the cost of significant losses.<\/p>\n

“Year after year and month after month, the Russian army is finding it harder and harder to find people. Putin is apparently postponing a new wave of mobilization, so the Ministry of Defense is having to put more pressure on everyone to sign contracts,” said Grigory Sverdlin, director of Get Lost.<\/p>\n

Military analysts say Russia is being forced to send new units to the front immediately to replace losses, rather than build up reserves. Western governments estimate that nearly 500,000 Russian soldiers have died in the fighting.<\/p>\n

At the same time, the Russian army has failed to significantly increase its territorial gains. The Russian Defense Ministry claimed to have captured 2,226 sq km in the first half of the year, while the Institute for the Study of War estimates the net territorial gain at only 81.1 sq km after Ukrainian counteroffensives.<\/p>\n

Russia offers payments of up to 4.5 million rubles per contract to recruit new soldiers. However, local authorities have been given an annual quota of 409,000 recruits and are increasingly pressuring potential candidates.<\/p>\n

“There are traps for each group to trick them or force them to sign a contract,” said military law expert Artem Kliga.<\/p>\n

In some regions, officials conduct “conversations” with debtors, criminal suspects, and other men they consider potential recruits. From 2026, local military services will also be given the right to issue summonses throughout the year.<\/p>\n

As recruitment increases, desertions are also on the rise. According to the human rights organization Peace Plea, at least 28,000 Russians have been convicted of desertion from military service.<\/p>\n

Meanwhile, fears are growing in Russia about a new mobilization after the September State Duma elections, with an FT source close to the Russian Defense Ministry warning that it could have significant political consequences for the Kremlin.<\/p>\n

Recall that Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said that Russia is preparing for a new wave of mobilization after the State Duma elections, which are scheduled to be held on September 21. According to him, the Kremlin plans to call up from 300 to 500 thousand people.<\/a><\/p>\n
