A drone carrying an explosive device crashed into the wing of a Ukrainian An-124 transport plane at Leipzig Airport in Germany. The explosive device did not detonate.<\/strong><\/p>\n

This is reported by<\/a> the German publication Die Zeit, whose journalists reviewed the surveillance camera recordings.<\/p>\n

The incident occurred on August 4 at around 7:30 p.m. The footage shows an object moving towards the An-124 and then crashing into one of the aircraft\u2019s wings.<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

As the publication notes, the wings are among the most vulnerable parts of an aircraft, as they are usually where the fuel tanks are located. Therefore, the detonation of explosives could have led to much more serious consequences.<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

After the impact, the object bounced off the wing and fell to the ground. Journalists also found marks on the wing that were consistent with this sequence of events. It is currently unknown why the explosive device did not detonate.<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

The drone itself was discovered by accident only about four hours after the incident. It was noticed by the driver of a bus carrying a tour group.<\/p>\n

The explosive device was not found on the drone itself, as previously reported, but at a distance from it. It is likely that the explosive device became detached from the drone during a collision with the aircraft.<\/p>\n

According to Die Zeit, it is a quadcopter with four rotors about the size of a microwave oven.<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

At the same time, it remains unknown how the drone ended up near the Ukrainian An-124 and what route it was taking. The investigation must also determine whether the drone was conducting reconnaissance of the aircraft or whether its operator had another purpose.<\/p>\n

The incident occurred amid heightened security measures at European airports due to the threat of sabotage and hybrid attacks. <\/p>\n
