A Syrian court sentenced former President Bashar al-Assad to death in absentia. After the fall of his regime, he fled to Russia.<\/strong><\/p>\n

This was reported by the Syrian state news agency SANA and France 24.<\/p>\n

The court found Assad guilty of war crimes and crimes against humanity committed during the civil war in Syria, which has been ongoing since 2011.<\/p>\n

This is the first such verdict issued by Syria’s transitional authorities in trials against the former regime. Cases are being heard both in absentia and in court.<\/p>\n

Bashar al-Assad took over Syria in 2000 following the death of his father, Hafez al-Assad, who had ruled the country for nearly three decades. Following the outbreak of mass protests against his rule in 2011, the authorities used force to suppress them, a key factor in the outbreak of the civil war.<\/p>\n

In the following years, Assad’s forces, with Russian support, fought against various opposition and Islamist groups. The conflict resulted in widespread destruction, enormous human losses, and the displacement of millions of people.<\/p>\n

In late November 2024, Syrian rebels launched a large-scale offensive against Assad’s forces and Russian troops. Rebel representatives claimed the offensive was a response to the intensification of Russian and Syrian air strikes against civilians in Idlib, which was then under opposition control.<\/p>\n
