German intelligence agencies have little doubt that Russia may be behind the drone incident at Leipzig\/Halle airport. However, the German government has not yet publicly accused Moscow, as the investigation has not yet received conclusive evidence of its involvement.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Spiegel writes<\/a> about this.<\/p>\n

After the incident, German Interior Minister Alexander Dobrindt returned early from a vacation in Italy. He said that law enforcement was considering a possible scenario of a hybrid attack that could have been carried out by a foreign state. The minister did not name a specific country.<\/p>\n

According to the publication, German intelligence services at the same time consider the Russian trail to be the most likely version. Investigators are also checking other options, but assess them as much less likely.<\/p>\n

Spiegel notes that if Moscow’s involvement is confirmed, the German government will have to react. One of the first steps could be to consider the incident at the NATO level.<\/p>\n

According to the investigation, the quadcopter carrying the explosives collided with a Ukrainian transport plane. Investigators also do not rule out that the aircraft briefly landed on it before falling.<\/p>\n

Part of the drone was later found on the wing of the Antonov near the fuel tanks. The detonator failed. If the explosive had detonated near the tanks, the consequences could have been much more serious.<\/a><\/p>\n

Investigators were also concerned that the drone remained undetected for more than four hours, and the airport’s drone detection system failed to detect it.<\/p>\n

According to Spiegel, the quadcopter had two SIM cards and operators could control it via a mobile network. This technology theoretically allows the drone to be controlled from a long distance via video communication.<\/p>\n

Conventional radio frequency detection systems and electronic jamming equipment would be ineffective in this case. Specialized radar equipment would be required to detect such an airport quadcopter in a timely manner.<\/p>\n

After the incident, such a system was installed at the airport’s observation deck.<\/p>\n

Spiegel notes that the Leipzig incident has demonstrated the vulnerability of Germany’s critical infrastructure to such drones. Most German airports and other potentially vulnerable sites are currently only partially prepared to counter such threats.<\/p>\n

If the investigation confirms the Russian trail, the case could have not only criminal but also serious political and security consequences for Germany and NATO. <\/p>\n
