A foreign drone was spotted in Latvian airspace, which, according to preliminary data, entered the country due to the influence of Russian electronic warfare equipment. NATO fighter jets were scrambled to intercept it, destroying the target.<\/strong><\/p>\n

This was reported by<\/a> the National Armed Forces of Latvia.<\/p>\n

The drone was spotted in the Balvi region in the east of the country. Due to the air threat, Latvian authorities have declared an alert in the Aug\u0161daugava, Preili, Rezekne, Balvi and Al\u016bksne regions, which border Russia and Belarus.<\/p>\n

“In response to a threat in Latvian airspace, fighter jets from the NATO Baltic Airspace Patrol mission were deployed,” the Latvian Armed Forces reported.<\/p>\n

After the interception, the drone was shot down. The air alert was canceled at 04:50.<\/p>\n

According to the Latvian military, the drone could have deviated from its route and ended up over the country’s territory due to the action of Russian electronic warfare systems.<\/p>\n

The National Armed Forces emphasized that, together with allies, they continue to monitor airspace around the clock and strengthen the air defense system on NATO’s eastern border.<\/p>\n

“The Latvian military, together with NATO allies, continues to control the country’s airspace and has strengthened air defense capabilities on the eastern border,” the report says.<\/p>\n

As a reminder, a Russian strike drone violated Moldovan airspace on the evening of August 10 during the Russian Federation’s massive attack on the Odessa region<\/a> . The drone stayed over the country’s territory for about a minute, after which it returned to Ukraine.<\/p>\n

As reported, on Saturday, August 9, a powerful explosion occurred near the settlement of Krokmaz in the Stefan-Vodka district of Moldova, after which vegetation caught fire.
