US President Donald Trump has instructed Defense Secretary Pete Buttigieg to significantly scale back joint US-South Korean military exercises, citing his “very good relationship” with North Korean leader Kim Jong-un.<\/strong><\/p>\n

He wrote about this in Truth Social<\/a> .<\/p>\n

The American president said he was unhappy with the US’s participation in annual exercises with South Korea. He said the maneuvers were expensive and sent a “completely inappropriate and hostile signal” to North Korea.<\/p>\n

“Given my very good relationship with Kim Jong-un of North Korea, I am unhappy that the United States has long agreed to participate in joint military exercises with South Korea,” Trump wrote.<\/p>\n

He also stated that most of the costs of the exercises are allegedly paid for by the United States. According to Trump, it is too late to completely cancel this year’s maneuvers, so he instructed to significantly reduce their scale.<\/p>\n

The annual joint exercises between the US and South Korea are scheduled to last 11 days and start on August 17. They are being conducted to practice joint operational actions and prepare to deter a possible threat from the DPRK.<\/p>\n

Trump has previously criticized the exercises, calling them expensive and provocative. At the same time, he has repeatedly spoken positively about Kim Jong-un and met with him three times during his first term. During these meetings, the United States and North Korea tried to agree on the denuclearization of the Korean Peninsula.<\/p>\n

Recall that North Korea could receive up to $22 billion in external revenues in 2022-2025 despite international sanctions. A significant part of the funds came from military cooperation with Russia<\/a> , including the supply of ammunition and other weapons.<\/p>\n
