The Swiss Federal Council has extended the temporary protection status S for citizens of Ukraine until March 4, 2028. At the same time, the country is introducing new rules for Ukrainians who will apply for protection in the future.<\/strong><\/p>\n

This was reported by<\/a> the Swiss Federal Council.<\/p>\n

The decision was made on August 19. The Swiss government explained that due to the lack of real prospects for a lasting end to the war in Ukraine, they decided to extend the S status for about another year and a half.<\/p>\n

At the same time, new restrictions for new applicants will come into effect from August 20, 2026. They will apply to citizens of Ukraine who are not performing military duties that may apply to them in accordance with Ukrainian legislation.<\/p>\n

At the same time, the innovations will not affect Ukrainians who have already received S status. For them, the conditions of stay and protection will remain unchanged.<\/p>\n

The Federal Council also emphasized that Switzerland will continue to support the integration of Ukrainians. Each S status holder is provided with funding of up to 3,000 Swiss francs per year. These funds can be used for language courses, training, retraining, and assistance with employment.<\/p>\n

The Swiss authorities noted that if the security situation in Ukraine stabilizes, the issue of further extension of the S status will be reviewed separately.<\/p>\n

Currently, temporary protection status S remains the main mechanism for supporting Ukrainians who were forced to leave the country due to a full-scale war.<\/p>\n

As a reminder, the Council of the European Union officially extended temporary protection for Ukrainians<\/a> who left the country due to the full-scale Russian invasion. At the same time, additional conditions were introduced for new applicants.<\/p>\n

As reported, as of the end of June 2026, more than 4.4 million Ukrainian citizens were under temporary protection in the countries of the European Union.<\/a><\/p>\n
