The country, which has some of the world’s largest oil reserves, is short about 15 million liters of fuel every day.

The FT writes about this.

Iran has long imported gasoline to cover its domestic shortages. But a U.S. naval blockade, in effect since July 14, has severely limited Tehran’s ability to buy fuel from abroad. The situation has also been complicated by U.S. and Israeli strikes that destroyed some of Iran’s oil refining capacity in the early weeks of the war that began in February.

According to Iran’s Energy Consumption Optimization Organization, the country consumes about 135 million liters of gasoline daily, but is currently short of about 15 million liters.

US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessant said on August 24 that Washington is expanding secondary sanctions against Iran’s trading partners. Thus, the US plans to increase economic and financial pressure on Tehran.

After the administration of US President Donald Trump declared economic war on Iran, there was a panic at gas stations across the country. Iranian authorities have already called the shortage of gasoline critical.

Additional lines at gas stations have been created by a restriction that allows drivers to fill up with no more than 20 liters of gasoline at a time. This means motorists have to return to the gas stations more often.

At the same time, the Iranian authorities claim that the country is able to withstand American pressure. Tehran also refuses to comply with Trump’s demand to open the Strait of Hormuz. The United States and Iran accuse each other of violating a June agreement that provided for the gradual opening of this important sea route and the subsequent conclusion of a long-term peace agreement.

Iranian officials also blame the fuel crisis on a system of state subsidies that allows the country’s roughly 90 million residents to buy gasoline at some of the lowest prices in the world, ranging from 15,000 to 50,000 rials per liter.

The government has been tapping strategic fuel reserves for months, but Tehran acknowledges that the current price and quota system is becoming increasingly unsustainable due to high inflation and supply disruptions.

Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian said that selling gasoline at below-market prices is putting a significant strain on the state budget. He said these funds are also needed to subsidize food and support workers.

Presidential Chief of Staff Mohsen Haji-Mirzai said the government plans to reduce fuel quotas. However, the authorities have not yet made a final decision on new gasoline prices.

The increase in fuel prices could be an additional blow to the population amid a sharp decline in purchasing power. The Iranian rial has fallen to a new low in recent days – about 2 million rials to the dollar. Annual inflation has approached 90%, and food prices have risen to 130%.

This month, authorities launched a pilot project to raise gasoline prices in Kerman province, but stopped it within hours. Energy analyst Morteza Behrouzifar said that gasoline prices in Iran are effectively a barometer of inflation, so a sharp increase could cause a serious economic shock.

By the way, the United States and Iran have not yet been able to make progress in negotiations to end the war in the Middle East and restore the interim agreement that the parties concluded in June.

It was previously reported that on the night of July 15, the United States launched a new series of strikes on Iranian military facilities and announced the resumption of a naval blockade of ships heading to or leaving Iranian ports .

The day before, Iranian cruise missiles hit two tankers flying the flag of the United Arab Emirates in the Strait of Hormuz .
