The changes address allegations that social media can contribute to addiction among teenagers.

The New York Times reports this.

The new features are planned to be rolled out within the next six months, although individual changes, including those related to age verification, may take up to a year.

Teenagers are planning to set limits on their use of Instagram and Facebook—no more than two hours per day. Extended usage is only possible with parental permission.

Apps will also be automatically blocked at night, from 12:00 AM to 6:00 AM. Notifications will be disabled for teen accounts during the school day, from 8:00 AM to 3:00 PM.

Additionally, teens will receive reminders every 15 minutes of social media use. Additional messages will appear after 60 and 90 minutes.

Meta also plans to give young users more control over how they consume content.

In particular, teenagers can turn off autoplay for videos and photos, and also opt out of the personalized algorithmic feed.

They should also disable like counting and limit the use of extreme makeup filters and filters that simulate cosmetic surgery.

The company promises to tighten restrictions on contact between adults and adolescents, although it has not yet disclosed the specific mechanism for these rules.

Meta also pledged to respond more quickly to reports of harmful content – 90% of such complaints are planned to be processed within six hours.

Parents, in turn, will have more control over their children’s activity: they will be able to see app usage time, search queries, and interactions with adults. Notifications about the creation of new accounts or interactions with suspicious profiles are also provided.

Meta also plans to strengthen its age verification technologies to more accurately identify teenage accounts and remove profiles of users under 13.

Ultimately, this could be one of the largest ever increases in restrictions for teens on social media, from time limits to algorithm restrictions, nighttime blocking, and expanded parental controls.

Also follow “Pryamy” on Facebook , X , Telegram and Instagram.

Meta has agreed to strengthen protections for underage Instagram and Facebook users as part of a settlement with 47 US states, the District of Columbia, and US territories.
