The death toll from massive flooding on the Nepal-Tibet border has risen to 469. About 900 people are still missing in Nepal, as rescuers continue to search.<\/strong><\/p>\n

This was reported by<\/a> Nepal police on Friday, the BBC reports.<\/p>\n

The disaster struck the border region after hours of heavy rain and landslides. Streams of water and mud destroyed houses, roads and other infrastructure. Rescue efforts are ongoing, but are being complicated by the threat of new flooding.<\/p>\n

A Red Cross spokesman told the BBC that rescuers were “on constant alert.” A lake of water and debris has formed near the border. There are fears it could overflow its banks and cause another flood in the coming days.<\/p>\n

Authorities are also monitoring water levels upstream from the Giriong port, a land crossing between Nepal and Tibet, which was washed away by a powerful flow of water and mud during the disaster.<\/p>\n

The situation remains difficult on the Tibetan side of the border, with more than 550 people missing, including about 260 foreigners. Some of the missing are pilgrims on their way to the sacred Mount Kailash.<\/p>\n

Chinese state media reported that rescuers in the area have been ordered to suspend search operations for now due to dangerous conditions.<\/p>\n

As a reminder, 53 Ukrainian citizens went missing in Nepal after a large-scale flood on the border with Tibet<\/a> . Among them is a group of 46 Ukrainian tourists, with whom contact was lost on the morning of August 26. Currently, there is no confirmed data on the number of dead or injured Ukrainians.<\/p>\n

Flash floods in China and Nepal have reportedly caused widespread loss of life. In total, more than 1,300 people are missing and the confirmed death toll has already exceeded 160.<\/a><\/p>\n
