As a result of a series of Russian attacks on August 27\u201328, 2026, warehouses of Ukrainian book publishers, retailer FOZZY, and energy company YASNO were damaged in the Kyiv region. The companies are estimating losses that already amount to tens of millions of hryvnias, and the Fozzy Group network has suspended employee bonuses and hiring due to the scale of the destruction.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Destruction of a warehouse with books in the Kyiv region<\/strong><\/h3>\n

As a result of a Russian drone attack on August 28, a warehouse was destroyed in the Kyiv region, where the circulations of the book chains “Readeat” and Book.ua, as well as the products of a number of publishing houses, were stored.<\/p>\n

The founder of the Readeat chain, Dmitry Feliksov, reported<\/a> that a hostile drone hit a warehouse, causing the company to temporarily stop sending orders to customers.<\/p>\n

“Russia is methodically destroying Ukrainian book publishing and distribution. The industry, which only a few years ago began to rise from its knees, is once again pressed to the ground. Books, warehouses, printing houses are turning into black ash,” he said.<\/p>\n

According to Feliksov, more than 60 thousand copies were destroyed, and the estimated business losses exceed 23 million hryvnias.<\/p>\n

“Nothing can be saved. Everything has burned down. So far, they have extinguished the fire, but it is already clear that nothing can be saved,” he noted.<\/p>\n

He added that to support the industry, the state could introduce public procurement of books, subsidies, preferential loans, tax holidays, and targeted state and European grants.<\/p>\n

The entrepreneur reported that an operational working group has already been formed, which is working with publishers and logisticians to restructure supply chains, transport leftovers, and diversify storage to new warehouses.<\/p>\n

“The first task is to restore supplies, resume shipments to readers. The second is to record losses, damages and begin work related to compensation to find the optimal solution for all parties – for logisticians, publishers and for us, as book distributors,” said Feliksov.<\/p>\n

The publishers “Uroboros”, “Osnovy”, “Vikhola”, Beagle and “Georges” reported the victims in the book warehouse.<\/p>\n

Co-founder of Vivat Publishing House Yulia Orlova wrote<\/a> that their books were also stored in the warehouse.<\/p>\n

“We lost in this lottery, where will it fly tonight,” she noted. According to her, the team had previously partially relocated the circulations to Lviv and its own bookstores, but many new publications prepared for the Book Country festival remained in the Kyiv warehouse.<\/p>\n

Book.ua reported that none of the warehouse employees were injured, but the warehouse held the entire stock of paper books of the online store, some of which were damaged or destroyed. The company temporarily stopped accepting and shipping online orders for paper publications and ended the “Happy Hours” campaign early. Physical bookstore chains continue to operate as usual.<\/p>\n

The publishing house “Who is this?” noted<\/a> that 80 percent of their books were in stock, which is why the company suspended processing and shipping pre-orders. The publishing house “Krapki” reported<\/a> that it had lost most of its remaining circulation. The online bookstore “Arfa” also suffered losses.<\/p>\n

Ivan Malkovich, director of the publishing house “A-BA-BA-GA-LA-MA-GA”, reported that the warehouse from which the company’s publications were sent out has been destroyed, so delays in sending orders are expected in the near future. The publishing house “Stilet and Stylos” and Creative Women Publishing, whose warehouse stored 3,055 copies, also reported the destruction of their books.<\/p>\n

Dmytro Stretovych, co-founder of the Stretovych publishing house, said<\/a> that a month and a half ago the company urgently relocated its books from the warehouse, so they remained intact. At the same time, the publishing house’s books that were left with partners “Readeat” and Book.ua burned down.<\/p>\n

Publishers called on the state to implement the following tools to support the industry:<\/p>\n
