In Bukovina, law enforcement officers uncovered a scheme for illegal trade in organs and tissues of deceased persons, organized by officials of the Chernivtsi Regional Pathological Bureau. Four employees of the bureau were detained and reported on suspicion.<\/strong><\/p>\n

This was announced by<\/a> Prosecutor General Ruslan Kravchenko.<\/p>\n

According to law enforcement officials, the participants in the scheme interacted with relatives of the deceased, prepared fictitious documents, seized anatomical materials and organized their further transfer to customers. Skin, bones, tendons, corneas and other tissues were removed from the bodies of the deceased. They were sold to companies that manufacture bioimplants for surgery and dentistry.<\/p>\n

The pathology bureau did not have a license to practice medicine in the field of transplantology. The trade was covered up with fictitious agreements on “scientific and medical cooperation”, and the transfer of tissues was formalized as “supply of raw materials for the production of bioimplants.”<\/p>\n

According to the investigation, relatives of the deceased were persuaded to agree to the removal of materials by offering free embalming or storage of the body, as well as discounts on other services. At the same time, they were not informed about the actual volumes of the removals and the subsequent sale of the tissues.<\/p>\n

Law enforcement officers have also documented cases of anatomical material being removed without the consent of relatives. In one episode, consent was provided by an employee of a geriatric nursing home who was caring for the deceased, even though relatives were responsible for the burial.<\/p>\n

The collected materials were delivered to recipients by rail in containers with refrigerant. In particular, the transfer of 10 boxes of biomaterials and the shipment of corneas by train Chernivtsi – Odesa was recorded.<\/p>\n

Payment for services was made to the bureau’s account based on acceptance and delivery certificates. At the same time, participants in the scheme received “shadow cash” every month through the currency exchange office, which was distributed depending on the role of each participant and the number of withdrawals.<\/p>\n

Four employees of the Chernivtsi Regional Pathological Anatomical Bureau were detained. They were informed of suspicion of illegal trade in human anatomical materials, committed by a group of persons in a prior conspiracy, under Part 5 of Article 143 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine. Searches were conducted in the premises of the bureau, at the places of residence and in the cars of the suspects.<\/p>\n
