The systems are mounted on light, highly mobile infantry squad vehicles.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>This is reported by <a href=\"https:\/\/interestingengineering.com\/military\/high-energy-laser-systems-fry-drones\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Interesting\u00a0Engineering<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The systems were transferred to the US Army&#8217;s Rapid Capabilities and Critical Technologies Office (RCCTO) as part of the first phase of the AMP-HEL program to create a multifunctional high-energy laser.<\/p>\n<p>Before being handed over to the military, the prototypes were tested at Yuma Proving Ground in Arizona to check their effectiveness, mobility, safety, and ability to hit targets. After that, service members were trained to operate the systems at Fort Sill in Oklahoma.<\/p>\n<p>AeroVironment said the LOCUST system has already demonstrated reliability and readiness for use in counter-drone operations. The company is also working to scale up production of such lasers for mobile and stationary platforms.<\/p>\n<p>The AMP-HEL program is part of the U.S. Army&#8217;s broader directed energy weapons initiative, which aims to develop mobile systems to counter drones and other aerial threats.<\/p>\n<p>Next month, AeroVironment plans to deliver two more AMP-HEL systems based on the Joint Light Tactical Vehicle.
