Tens of thousands of people took to the streets of Spanish cities over the migration crisis in Ceuta and the policies of the Pedro S\u00e1nchez government. In Madrid, clashes with police followed the demonstration.<\/strong><\/p>\n

The protests took place on September 2, Ceuta Day. The city usually holds festive events on this day, but this year they took place against the backdrop of the migration crisis.<\/p>\n

According to Spanish authorities, about 50,000 people took to the streets in Madrid alone.<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

After the rally ended, gunshots and explosions rang out in the capital. Police used rubber bullets and tear gas to disperse the crowd.<\/p>\n

Rallies were also held in Barcelona, Valencia, Seville and over 200 other cities and towns. Demonstrators carried Spanish flags.<\/p>\n

Spain’s Minister of Territorial Policy, Angel Victor Torres, called the protests politically motivated.<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

“This is not a demonstration of support for the city of Ceuta or its residents; this is an attack on the Spanish government,” he said.<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

The government also rejected accusations that the authorities had left Ceuta alone to deal with the crisis. This week, Madrid allocated 309 million euros for the city’s social services, housing for migrants and security infrastructure.<\/p>\n

Anti-racism protests were held simultaneously in some cities.<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

It was previously reported that about 60 migrants reached the coast of mainland Spain by boat<\/a> and landed on a beach in the province of Murcia in front of tourists.<\/p>\n

As a reminder, Spain has tightened security in the North African enclave of Ceuta after a sharp increase in the flow of illegal migrants from Morocco.<\/a> The military and additional Civil Guard forces have been sent to the city, and local authorities have declared a humanitarian and security crisis.<\/p>\n
