Russian dictator Vladimir Putin tried to impose a distorted view of the situation on the frontline on a phone call with US President Donald Trump in order to push Washington to increase pressure on Ukraine. The Institute for the Study of War (ISW) believes that the Kremlin is thus trying to force Kyiv to agree to Russian demands.<\/strong><\/p>\n

This is stated<\/a> in the ISW report dated September 8.<\/p>\n

Putin’s aide Yuri Ushakov said that during the conversation, the leaders discussed the results of the Russian dictator’s meeting with US special representatives Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner, which took place on September 6, as well as the prospects for ending the war.<\/p>\n

According to Ushakov, Putin allegedly gave Trump a detailed assessment of the situation on the battlefield and told him what steps the US could take to end the war as soon as possible. The Kremlin also reported on the conversation itself, noting that it lasted about an hour.<\/p>\n

At the same time, ISW analysts emphasize that Putin’s assessment of the course of the war is largely distorted due to systematic lies by the Russian military leadership. The dictator regularly makes exaggerated statements about the successes of the Russian army, creating a picture of the supposedly constant and inevitable advance of Russian troops.<\/p>\n

ISW suggests that this is exactly the picture Putin could have presented to Trump during the phone call. The goal, analysts believe, was to convince the US president that the situation for Ukraine was supposedly worsening, so Washington should force Kyiv to agree to Russia’s conditions.<\/p>\n

After the conversation with Trump, Kremlin representatives also repeated theses about the alleged worsening of the situation in Ukraine. In particular, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov stated that the situation for Ukraine is allegedly worsening every day, and Russian demands for peace may become tougher.<\/p>\n

At the same time, ISW notes that the real dynamics of the fighting differ significantly from the Russian picture. According to analysts, Ukrainian forces conducted successful counter-offensive operations in 2026 and liberated more than 745 square kilometers of territory. Russian troops have still not been able to capture Sloviansk, Kramatorsk, and Druzhkivka.<\/p>\n

ISW also emphasizes that the Kremlin’s negotiating position has not actually changed, despite the changes on the front. Russia continues to demand that Ukraine agree to its maximalist conditions, while Kyiv supports the US proposal to resume negotiations in a trilateral format.<\/p>\n

As reported the day before, US President Donald Trump and Russian dictator Vladimir Putin had an hour-long telephone conversation on September 8.<\/a> The parties discussed the war against Ukraine and the results of recent trips by American representatives to Kyiv and Moscow.<\/p>\n
