The European Union is working on its own satellite communications system, IRIS\u00b2, which is being considered as a European alternative to Starlink. The first satellites are scheduled to launch in 2029.<\/strong><\/p>\n

This was stated by European Commissioner for Defence and Space Andrius Kubilius during the International Space Summit in Paris on September 9\u201310, Radio Liberty reports<\/a> .<\/p>\n

At the same time, Kubilius called on EU countries not to direct excessive resources to individual national space programs, but to develop joint European projects.<\/p>\n

According to him, as member states’ defense spending increases, the risk that they will begin to act independently and duplicate joint initiatives increases.<\/p>\n

The European Commissioner’s statement followed Germany’s announcement of its intention to invest \u20ac35 billion in developing its own military space capabilities over the next four years. Meanwhile, total European investment in the IRIS\u00b2 project is estimated at \u20ac15 billion.<\/p>\n

The German program involves the development of satellite communications, reconnaissance and surveillance capabilities, communications security, and space monitoring.<\/p>\n

Kubilius stressed that the EU needs to maintain unity in the space sector, ensure interoperability of member states’ systems and create a common framework that will allow Europe to remain technologically sovereign and independent.<\/p>\n

Incidentally, Russia is significantly ahead of its own plans to deploy the Rassvet satellite system<\/a> , which is positioned as the Russian equivalent of Starlink.<\/p>\n

It was previously reported that Russia launched a second batch of Rassvet satellites, bringing the total number of such devices in orbit to approximately 40%<\/a> . However, for stable network operation, Ukrainian experts estimate that Russia needs to launch at least 200-250 satellites into orbit.<\/a><\/p>\n
