During the Russian attack, the Polish military did not immediately realize that a Ukrainian MiG-29 was operating near the border. Because of this, the plane could have come under \u201cfriendly fire.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n

The operational commander of the Polish Armed Forces, Ireneusz Nowak, said<\/a> this in an interview with Rzeczpospolita.<\/p>\n

A pair of fighter jets were on duty in Poland during the Russian attack on the night of July 30. When the Russian missile approached Polish airspace, one of the planes was refueling in mid-air, while the other F-16 was near the Ukrainian-Polish border.<\/p>\n

At approximately 04:00, the Polish pilot and command spotted an aerial object near the border that they could not identify. It was later determined to be a Ukrainian MiG-29<\/strong> .<\/p>\n

Novak noted that the Ukrainian fighter was tracking not only the Polish F-16, but also ground-based air defense systems.<\/p>\n

\u201cIf the Ukrainian pilot had lost his vigilance and violated our airspace, it could have resulted in friendly fire,\u201d the Polish commander explained.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

The incident occurred the same night that a Russian Kh-101 cruise missile crossed the Polish border and crashed near the village of Tarnawa-Kolonia in Lublin Voivodeship. The Ukrainian pilot pursued it, but broke off the pursuit about 20 seconds before the border.<\/p>\n

After that, the Operational Command of the Polish Armed Forces appealed to the General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine and the Air Force Command with a request to report on the movement of Ukrainian aviation near the Polish border.<\/p>\n

Before the incident, the Polish military received information about Russian missiles and drones that could approach the country’s airspace through the Ukrainian “Virazh” system. After the events of July 30, Ukraine began to transmit to Poland information about its own aircraft operating near the border.<\/p>\n

As a reminder, Poland previously restricted air traffic along the borders with Ukraine and Belarus<\/a> . The restrictions were introduced at the request of the Operational Command of the country’s Armed Forces.<\/p>\n

Poland also recently raised its military aviation<\/a> due to another massive Russian attack on Ukraine. At the same time, ground-based air defense and radar reconnaissance systems were put on alert.<\/p>\n
