On the night of Tuesday, September 15, NATO fighter jets destroyed a drone that violated Lithuanian airspace. The drone entered the country’s territory from the side of Belarus.<\/strong><\/p>\n

This was announced by Lithuanian President Gitanas Nauseda and Head of the Crisis Management Center Vilmantas Vitkauskas.<\/p>\n

Nauseda said that the drone was promptly destroyed by NATO fighter jets. He thanked the Alliance’s military for the quick response and stressed that, against the backdrop of Russian aggression against Ukraine, NATO’s readiness to respond to such incidents is important for the security of the region.<\/p>\n

“Together with NATO allies, Lithuania will defend its airspace,” the Lithuanian president said.<\/p>\n

Vitkauskas clarified that the drone flew into Lithuania from the territory of Belarus. According to him, the object passed over the Lentvaris and Trakai districts, after which it began moving west.<\/p>\n

The type of drone and other circumstances of the incident have not yet been specified.<\/p>\n

As a reminder, a damaged drone with explosives was found in an agricultural field in Vaslui County, Romania.<\/a> The device was found near the border with Moldova. Its origin has not yet been established.<\/p>\n
