North Korea has said it may resort to nuclear retaliation if it considers the actions of the United States and South Korea to be a threat to its security. Pyongyang called Washington and Seoul’s decision to strengthen the system of deterrence against threats from the DPRK a critical security challenge.<\/strong><\/p>\n

This was stated by<\/a> a representative of the North Korean Ministry of Defense in a comment to the state-run Korean Central News Agency (KCNA).<\/p>\n

This is a decision by the United States and South Korea, made on September 10 at a meeting of the Committee on Response to Threats of Weapons of Mass Destruction. At that time, the parties agreed to create an information exchange system to counter a potential attack from the DPRK, strengthen joint response capabilities, and intensify military training.<\/p>\n

The North Korean Defense Ministry said it considered the agreements to be “an open declaration of confrontation.” Pyongyang claims they create an excuse for the possible use of nuclear and biochemical weapons against North Korea and indicate preparations for war.<\/p>\n

According to a representative of the department, Pyongyang may “enact relevant articles” of the law on state nuclear forces policy if the actions of Washington and Seoul are regarded as a threat to the security of the DPRK.<\/p>\n

“I would like to advise you to analyze what the activation of the relevant articles means and take this as a serious warning,” said a representative of the North Korean Ministry of Defense.<\/p>\n

The DPRK statement also claims that accusations against North Korea regarding the threat of using weapons of mass destruction are allegedly being used by the US and its allies to cover up their own activities in the development and proliferation of such weapons.<\/p>\n

In particular, Pyongyang mentioned allegations of alleged American biolaboratories in Ukraine and a network of biochemical weapons development centers in other countries. At the same time, these allegations are not supported by independent evidence.<\/p>\n

The North Korean Defense Ministry said that the threat of an attack on North Korea using weapons of mass destruction will be considered a critical security challenge. Under such conditions, Pyongyang claims, the country may apply the relevant provision of the Nuclear Forces Act.<\/p>\n

The agency representative also added that the DPRK armed forces will continue to monitor the military activities of the United States and its allies. Pyongyang said it will regularly assess the level of threats to the country’s security.<\/p>\n

At the same time, the DPRK did not specify which provisions of the law could be applied and under what specific conditions.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

North Korea has reportedly built a new uranium enrichment facility at its main nuclear complex in Yongbyon.<\/a> The IAEA estimates that the new facility could house up to 28 centrifuge cascades.<\/p>\n
