The UK government has begun work on an updated wartime contingency plan and is urging citizens to prepare for possible major changes to their daily lives. In particular, Britons are advised to stock up on drinking water and canned food.<\/strong><\/p>\n

The government’s plan, known as the War Book, has not been updated in decades and is being developed against a backdrop of rising risks of conflict.<\/p>\n

American scholar Andrew Michta believes that the level of psychological readiness of British society for war remains low.<\/p>\n

“There is no preparedness for what is happening because the political elites are not addressing their public in a way that honestly states the seriousness of the situation,” said Michta.<\/p>\n

At the same time, journalists note that countries closer to the border with Russia are paying more attention to this threat. Examples include Sweden and Finland.<\/p>\n

In Sweden, school graduates are required to register for military service, after which the best candidates undergo up to 15 months of training and are enrolled in the reserve.<\/p>\n

Finland operates a system of universal military service for men and also has a trained reserve. According to the BBC, the country with a population of 5.5 million has 23,000 active military personnel and a reserve force of about 1 million.<\/p>\n

Finland also holds annual courses for representatives of government agencies, business, medicine, and other sectors on how to act in crisis situations.<\/p>\n

General Richard Shirreff believes that the British army, with its 70,000 troops, “simply cannot cope with the kind of war it will face.”<\/p>\n

Recall that journalists described several possible scenarios in which Russia could try to test NATO’s readiness for confrontation<\/a> . Among them are sabotage of underwater infrastructure, covert operations, seizure of strategic territories, and an offensive in the Suwalki Corridor area.<\/p>\n
