In Berlin, the local elections are led by the Left Party (Die Linke), which has received 24.5% of the vote, according to preliminary data. The Christian Democratic Union is in second place with 20%, followed by the AfD, the Greens and the SPD.<\/strong><\/p>\n

According to preliminary estimates, the AfD receives 16% of the vote, the Greens – 15%, and the SPD – 12%.<\/p>\n

The Left Party leader Elif Eralp campaigned on the housing crisis and rent cuts, with the party’s proposals including the expropriation of apartments owned by large corporate landlords.<\/p>\n

To form a government, the Left may need coalition agreements with other parties. Possible partners include the Social Democratic Party (SDP) and the Greens.<\/p>\n

On September 20, elections were also held in the federal state of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern. According to initial forecasts, the AfD is leading there with 37% of the vote, while the SPD is receiving 35.5%.<\/p>\n

As a reminder, the far-right Alternative for Germany (AfD),<\/a> which opposes support for Ukraine and favors rapprochement with Russia, won the state elections in Saxony-Anhalt. However, the party fell a few seats short of an independent majority in the local parliament.<\/p>\n
