The Lithuanian Seimas has supported a proposal to remove from the Constitution a provision that prohibits the deployment of weapons of mass destruction, including nuclear weapons, in the country. However, a final decision has not yet been made.<\/strong><\/p>\n

This is reported by<\/a> the Lithuanian broadcaster LRT.<\/p>\n

99 Sejm deputies<\/strong> voted for the relevant proposal, 13 against, and five more abstained.<\/p>\n

This is Article 137 of the Constitution of Lithuania, which currently prohibits the placement of weapons of mass destruction and military bases of foreign states on the territory of the country.<\/p>\n

However, today’s vote does not mean that the norm has already been removed from the Constitution.<\/p>\n

For the amendment to be finally adopted, the Sejm must hold two more votes, three months apart. During each of them, the changes must be supported by at least 94 out of 141 deputies<\/strong> .<\/p>\n

According to the Speaker of the Seimas, Juozas Olekas, the first vote on the adoption of the amendment is scheduled for October 6<\/strong> , and the final vote is scheduled for January 12, 2027<\/strong> .<\/p>\n

The Chairman of the Seimas Committee on Foreign Affairs, Remigijus Motuzas, stated that Lithuania should not create obstacles to NATO’s nuclear deterrence.<\/p>\n

According to him, the abolition of the current restriction should demonstrate to allies and potential adversaries Lithuania’s readiness to use all available collective defense mechanisms.<\/p>\n

At the same time, supporters of the amendment emphasize that its adoption in itself would not mean the automatic deployment of nuclear weapons in Lithuania. It would only remove the constitutional ban that currently makes such a scenario impossible.<\/p>\n

Recall that earlier, Lithuanian intelligence warned about Russia’s troop buildup near NATO borders<\/a> .<\/p>\n
