Ukraine plans to introduce clearer rules for students’ use of mobile phones and other gadgets during lessons. At the same time, it is proposed to allow educational institutions to independently determine how students will store their phones during classes.<\/strong><\/p>\n

This was reported<\/a> by MP Natalia Pipa.<\/p>\n

Bill No. 15105 provides for new rules for the use of gadgets by schoolchildren during school hours. Its authors propose to limit the use of phones, tablets, and smartwatches during lessons. At the same time, exceptions may apply for educational and medical needs, if agreed with the teacher.<\/p>\n

The document has not yet been approved – it has been returned for revision.<\/p>\n

Nataliya Pipa believes that it is not worth establishing the same procedure for all schools. Instead, educational institutions could decide for themselves where and how students will store their phones, and prescribe the appropriate rules in their charters.<\/p>\n

She suggests that the Ministry of Education and Science prepare general recommendations, and that each school determine a specific mechanism taking into account its own conditions.<\/p>\n

One option, the MP says, is to keep the phone in a backpack. According to her, this approach is supported by many teachers and principals, since it does not require the installation of special lockers or boxes.<\/p>\n

Another model involves children handing in their gadgets before class and picking them up after class. This is the procedure at the school where Pippa’s youngest son attends. During the shelter, the phones remain at school, and the teacher provides communication with the children.<\/p>\n

The deputy separately drew attention to the results of PISA-2025. According to the data she provided, 43% of Ukrainian schoolchildren have difficulty translating a text into their own words or comparing information from two sources.<\/p>\n

In her opinion, limiting the use of gadgets is part of a broader discussion about how increased screen time affects learning and the time children spend reading.<\/p>\n

It was previously reported that in Ukraine, teachers can reduce the duration of a lesson to 35 minutes if they notice that students are tired and have difficulty concentrating.<\/a> Teachers can also change the order of lessons in the schedule if necessary.<\/p>\n
