According to the “I Want to Live” project, among Russian prisoners of war in Ukraine there are citizens of 55 countries of the world. Thus, approximately every tenth captured Russian soldier has foreign citizenship.<\/strong><\/p>\n

According to the project, since the beginning of the full-scale invasion, almost 29,000 foreigners have signed contracts with the Russian armed forces. By 2026 alone, the Russian Defense Ministry planned to recruit another 18,500 citizens of other countries.<\/p>\n

According to “I Want to Live,” Russia is trying to attract foreigners primarily from poor countries. They are offered high salaries and supposedly simple work, but after signing a contract, they are sent to the front, including to the most dangerous areas.<\/p>\n

Due to pressure from other countries, Russia has stopped or suspended the recruitment of citizens of 39 countries. These include China, India, Egypt, Kenya, Pakistan, and Ghana.<\/p>\n

At the same time, Moscow has not given up on recruiting foreigners to the war against Ukraine. According to the project, Russian recruiters are now more active in South America, Central Asia, and Africa.<\/p>\n

This is also reflected in the number of foreigners captured in Ukraine. In the first nine months of 2026, there were more of them than in all of 2025.<\/p>\n

Among the prisoners are citizens of Argentina, Panama, Paraguay, Peru, Honduras, Vietnam, Mongolia and other countries.<\/p>\n

“I Want to Live” calls on governments of other countries and international organizations to step up the fight against Russian recruitment. In particular, it is about identifying recruiters and intermediaries, blocking channels for recruiting foreigners into the Russian army, and informing citizens about the consequences of signing such contracts.<\/p>\n
