The United Kingdom will not lift sanctions on Russian billionaires Alisher Usmanov and Mikhail Fridman, even though the European Union has decided to remove them from the sanctions list. Prime Minister Andy Burnham told Volodymyr Zelenskyy during a meeting in New York.<\/strong><\/p>\n

This is reported by<\/a> Bloomberg, citing sources familiar with the situation.<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

Burnham met with Zelensky on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly. During the conversation, he said he did not support the EU’s decision to lift sanctions on Usmanov and Friedman.<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

At the same time, Britain will maintain its sanctions against Russian billionaires. Burnham also called on Ukraine’s allies not to ease pressure on Russia to force Moscow to stop the war and sit at the negotiating table.<\/p>\n

The British Prime Minister’s office declined to comment on Bloomberg’s information. Downing Street’s statement about the meeting with Zelensky did not mention the EU decision. It only noted that Burnham advocated further tightening of sanctions against Russia.<\/p>\n

The European Union extended sanctions against almost 3,000 businessmen, politicians and companies for three years<\/a> . However, Usmanov and Fridman were removed from the list. France insisted on lifting sanctions on Usmanov, and Luxembourg on Fridman.<\/p>\n

Thus, the positions of Britain and the EU regarding the two Russian billionaires diverged. Previously, London and Brussels mostly acted together on the issue of sanctions against Russia.<\/p>\n

Usmanov previously invested in London football club Arsenal, but sold his stake in 2018. Friedman had lived in London since 2013, but left Britain after the sanctions were imposed.<\/p>\n

As a reminder, ambassadors from all 27 EU countries have agreed to lift sanctions on Russian businessmen Alisher Usmanov and Mikhail Fridman<\/a> . However, there is no final decision yet – it can still be blocked by any EU country. <\/p>\n
