Finnish President Alexander Stubb called on SpaceX founder Elon Musk to expand Ukraine’s access to the Starlink satellite communications network in Russia, where ballistic missile launchers are located.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Stubb told reporters in New York.<\/p>\n

According to the Finnish president, access to Starlink in areas where Russian missile systems are located could help Ukraine identify and destroy mobile launchers that are launching strikes on Ukrainian territory.<\/p>\n

“I urge Elon Musk to give the Ukrainians the ability to use Starlink in areas where ballistic missile launchers are located \u2013 either in occupied Ukraine or in Russia \u2013 for strategic purposes, as it would save lives,” Stubb said.<\/p>\n

He also noted the problem of Ukraine’s shortage of air defense assets ahead of winter. According to Reuters, Russia’s use of ballistic missiles reached a record high this summer.<\/p>\n

Stubb noted that American Patriot systems are capable of intercepting such missiles. At the same time, he noted, Ukraine’s stockpiles of interceptor missiles for these systems have significantly diminished, and the prospects for new deliveries remain uncertain.<\/p>\n

Starlink has been operating in Ukraine since the first months of Russia’s full-scale invasion, used in particular for military communications. However, the satellite service does not yet operate in Russia. Ukrainian officials believe its expansion could help counter Russian mobile missile systems located near the Ukrainian border.<\/p>\n
