Since the protests began, 1,949 people have been arrested, 305 police officers and 65 school employees, including 40 principals, have been injured.

This is reported by BBC News .

The protests initially affected schools in the Paris area, but after the largest high school union, Union Syndicale Lycéenne, called for a nationwide strike, they spread across France. University students and education unions also joined the protests.

The students are demanding an increase in the number of teachers, improved learning conditions, and a sufficient number of substitute teachers in case of a permanent teacher shortage. According to the source, some classes have up to 36 students.

On Friday, the French Ministry of National Education reported that protests or strikes had affected 564 secondary schools. The day before, demonstrations and blockades took place in 1,207 lyceums, and more than 400 schools were closed. Some educational institutions are conducting classes remotely.

At the beginning of the protests, Education Minister Edouard Geoffrey acknowledged that some of the students’ demands were “completely justified.” One teacher also stated that the students’ demands coincided with those of the teachers.

Meanwhile, protests in a number of cities have escalated into clashes and vandalism. According to the Ministry of Internal Affairs, 1,949 people have been detained since the protests began, and 305 police officers have been injured. The Minister of Education said that 65 school employees, including 40 principals, were also injured, and more than 100 schools suffered significant damage.

One of the most serious incidents was a fire at the Nelson Mandela Lycée in Nantes. 160 students were evacuated from the building and the 12-year-old school itself suffered significant damage.

Clashes also took place in Marseille, Brest, Paris, Rouen and Bordeaux. In Brest, police used tear gas, and in Paris, the entrances to several schools were set on fire.

The protests caused disruptions to public transport. In particular, in Bordeaux there were problems on all 6 tram lines, and in Lille some transport services were stopped due to school blockades.

Authorities say a minority of protesters were involved in the violence. Justice Minister Gerald Darmanen said he wanted to hold parents civilly liable for damages caused by their minor children during the protests.

At the same time, representatives of the protesters emphasize that a significant part of the actions are peaceful. Participants in the movement and their supporters also state that violence should not overshadow the initial demands of the schoolchildren for education and public services.

Recall that tens of thousands of people took to the streets of Spanish cities due to the migration crisis in Ceuta and the policies of the Pedro Sanchez government. In Madrid, clashes with police occurred after the action.

Also follow “Pryamim” on Facebook , X , Telegram , and Instagram.

Large-scale protests by high school students are ongoing in France, which began over problems in the education system and spread to various cities across the country.
